The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a financial hub and home to European institutions, is strengthening its role in the post-Brexit EU. The capital’s urban expansion is moving northwards, along the hills of the Alzette valley and the main transport infrastructure.
The Steinsel-Heisdorf residential project is situated close to one of the main roads linking the capital and near a railway station; it comprises two buildings containing fifteen and ten residential units respectively. The volumetric configuration of the first two storeys establishes a strong connection with the surrounding road network. The top floor has been designed to sit back from the lower levels, creating a system of green terraces that lend architectural quality to the development. Here, the volumes are lightened by the use of metal cladding and evoke the form of a ‘village’—in this case, an urban one—nestled amidst greenery.
To mitigate road noise (over 70 dBA), the façade facing the roads is constructed using materials that optimise sound wave absorption, thereby improving living conditions both within the flats and in the surrounding buildings. The façade consists of panels that can slide open at the windows and loggias. The development, which appears monolithic at first glance, transforms according to the residents’ use.
On the inner side, the buildings open out onto private gardens and a communal green space, using materials that promote transparency. The entrances are created by carving out sections from the main volume, forming portals that protect and connect the interior to the exterior. One of the entrances extends towards the junction of the main roads and serves as a representative and iconic feature of the project.
